Here
is what I believe:
"History" is the title of the finest
book ever written, having the largest number
of authors. Its pages are filled with excitement
and boredom, truths and myths, wisdom and ignorance,
tradition and change. The stories contained
within can be revealed with creativity and veracity
to inform, inspire and entertain humanity.
Historians ask the perennial question: "What
is the meaning of life--for people throughout
time?" History is both the means and the
material for understanding others and for defining
ourselves.
History offers an unlimited storehouse of valuable
human experience. To understand the past we
must attempt to know the human condition. To
explore the human condition as it has evolved
through time is an invitation to self discovery.
History is a powerful science and art requiring
maturity of thought. A convincing portrait of
the past often requires subtle and complex shading.
Insofar as history can be a self-portrait of
humanity, an accurate rendering is important.
"Black and white" notions of history
often are the refuge of uninformed individuals
or of unscrupulous propagandists.
Historians are detectives, witnesses, writers,
speakers, teachers and stewards of our collective
past. In my programs I strive to prevent "cultural
amnesia" by making our past accessible
and interesting to a broader public audience.
I invite you to join me in a fascinating and
never-ending journey through time.
What is "living history"?
Living history is the presentation and explanation
of life in an earlier time by skilled interpreters
for the purpose of educating and entertaining
diverse audiences. Bringing the past to life
is a powerful experience. Living history gets
people's attention. It informs them. It entertains.
And it leaves a lasting impression.
